If ever a book deserved the phrase “deus ex machina” this is it.

There is absolutely no suspense of any kind in the book. From very early on, we are told that God will solve all the problems and all will be good in the world. (except for an untold number of 10’s of thousands of deaths)

This is the aspect that is used to sell the book and is the aspect that kills the book. To have God come down and save the day is cheesy. Such a method is looked down on in most books and other media.

WHEN are these last days, escapist false prophets going to stop peddling fear and teach we are in the never ending, gates-of-hell-will-not-prevail New Covenant?

This book should be shelved in the religious fiction along with the Left Behind series.

Imagine, if you will, a new czar: an ambitious, post 9/11, cunning, fascist -and obviously devious- Russian ruler, who takes over his country through a very well-crafted coup d’etat.

So far so good, right? It gets better: add to the mix a very young and successful presidential advisor, madly in love with his right-hand woman who happens to be a CIA agent. Then make it really exciting by discovering oil in the Red Sea: oil money brings peace at last for the Middle East!

Then, to make it really interesting, the mad Russian convinces NATO (minus US, of course) and Arab countries to attack Israel for not complying with international nuclear treaties (a thinly veiled disguise: he’s actually going after their oil! But not a single government in the world seems to realize this! Only you, reader, are discover this… Amazing!)

After all these factors, there can only be one element missing: mystical scriptures -both old & new Testaments- that explain it all! I won’t go into it any more: some people (myself included) actually enjoy this watered-down Dan Brown-esque twist. Not the worst part of the story, actually.

But where “The Ezekiel Option” becomes utterly unbearable is when, in the midst of all these interlocking and interacting factors, you are forced to digest speech after speech enhancing the characters’ recently discovered faith, and their overwhelming zeal to convince everybody -including the unwary reader- that their faith is not only the true, the only, the unmistakable, and that unless you are a true Christian, brother: your days are doomed.

As if this were not obscene enough, at the End of Times (Yup: It’s in here, too!) only those who are actual Christians will survive. The rest of us… well, shucks, it seems 21 centuries of blind fanaticism and xenophobia were right, and we were wrong. Hell awaits all who do not share the author’s promoted faith!

So, every character that converts is saved. Those who don’t, don’t. And the moral of the story is…

No wonder Rush Limbaugh loved it so much! (BTW: The author worked for/with Limabugh beofre)
